PCSX2 Download – Official PS2 Emulator for PC, Mac & Linux

All three buttons lead to the project itself: the project’s own website and its GitHub account. We host nothing and never send you to a mirror. The current stable release is v2.8.2, published on 4 September 2026, and it is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence, so it costs nothing and carries no ads.

Which Build to Get: Stable or Nightly

The team publishes two kinds of builds. The stable line changes every few months and suits most players. Nightly builds land several times a day; pick one only if you want the newest fixes, plan to report a bug, or the team has asked you to test something. Here is what each v2.8.2 asset is for:

AssetForSize
Windows installer (.exe)Most PC users; installs like any program44.6 MB
Portable 7z archivePCs where you want everything in one folder24.5 MB
macOS .tar.xzIntel and Apple-silicon Macs23.2 MB
AppImageMost Linux distributions57.3 MB
FlatpakLinux and Steam Deck (also on Flathub)26.8 MB

Install on Windows, macOS and Linux

  • PC: open the installer and follow its wizard. The portable 7z opens with 7-Zip or with Extract All on recent versions of Microsoft’s desktop OS; add an empty portable.ini file beside the program to keep settings in that folder. It needs the latest x64 Visual C++ runtime.
  • Mac: double-click the archive, drag the app into Applications and allow Rosetta 2 if macOS asks, since the app is an x86-64 program.
  • Linux: mark the AppImage as executable (chmod +x) and open it, or install the Flathub package through KDE Discover, another app store or the terminal.

System Requirements

Figures come from the official requirements page. As a minimum you need a 64-bit CPU with SSE4.1, a PassMark single-thread score of 1500 or more, 2 physical cores, 8 GB of RAM and a GPU with Vulkan 1.1, Direct3D 11 or OpenGL 3.3; an older OpenGL 3.2 card will not start the renderer. For demanding titles the team suggests AVX2, four or more cores, 16 GB of RAM and a card with 4 GB of VRAM.

On the OS side: version 10 (21H2 LTSC or 22H2) or 11 of Microsoft’s desktop system; macOS 11 Big Sur or later, so 12 Monterey and newer are fine, with 14 and 15 recommended; Ubuntu 22.04 or a similar distro. Support for Ubuntu 20.04 ended after 1.6.0.

Old Versions, Plugins and 32-Bit Builds

People still look for a 32bit build or the plugin era. Those ended long ago: 32-bit support was dropped after 1.6.0, the same point where Win 7 and 8 lost support, and the old plugin system was removed in the 2.0 rewrite. Older stable tags stay on GitHub if you need one for a saved state:

0.9.1 arrived in July 2006, 0.9.6 is the oldest tag on GitHub, 0.9.7 moved the licence to GPL-3.0 and 0.9.8 shipped in May 2011 with a new interface after work that ran from 2007, 2008 and 2010 into 2011. Version 1.0 (often written 1.0.0) came in 2012, then 1.2 (1.2.0) and 1.2.1, 1.4.0 and 1.6.0 on 7 May 2020. The 1.5.0 and 1.7.0 lines were development branches: 1.5.0 builds ran through 2017, 2018 and 2019, and the 1.7 nightlies, with long numbers in the 1.7.4 thousands, ran through 2021, 2022 and 2023. 2.0.0 followed on 13 July 2024, then 2.2.0 on 31 October 2024, 2.4.0 in June 2025, 2.6.0 to 2.6.3 in January 2026 and 2.8.0 in August. Tag 2.1.4 is a nightly from July 2024. Searches for 1.50, 140 or 121 usually mean 1.5.0, 1.4.0 or 1.2.1, and numbers like 0.9.9, 1.1, 1.1.0, 1.3, 1.3.0, 1.3.1, 1.3.3, 1.5.2, 1.7.2, 1.8, 1.8.0, 1.21, 0.11.0 or 0.12.1 never shipped as stable releases; there is no 1.8 at all.

Before First Boot: BIOS and Your Own Game Discs

The program ships without any Sony code. Before a disc boots you must add a BIOS ROM from a console you own, and it should match the region of your discs; the model codes for each market are listed in our BIOS for PS2 overview. Once you have it, our guide to the BIOS step inside the app walks you through the wizard and settings. A file with a name like 70012_BIOS_V12_USA_200 is a console image from an SCPH model, never part of this program, so treat any site that bundles one with the installer as a red flag.

For your library, rip your own discs to an ISO or another disc image format; the app reads them from any folder. We list no ROMs. Pages that promise game ISOs with a copy of the program tend to wrap it in adware.

Is the Emulator Free and Safe?

Yes, as long as it comes from the official site or the PCSX2 GitHub account. Emulators are legal software. The code is public and anyone can build it, so a paid version, a forum “pack” or a Reddit reupload adds risk and nothing else. Compatibility is high: most PlayStation 2 games run well on mid-range hardware, though Gran Turismo 4, Def Jam: Fight for NY or ESPN NFL 2K5 each have entries worth checking in the compatibility list on the official website first.

There is no official Android, iOS or console version. Any APK using this name is unofficial. On a phone, ARMSX2, the community fork for ARM64 devices, is the practical route, and adding your image to it is covered in our AetherSX2 BIOS guide. For a real PlayStation backup copy, the same image works on both.
